Local Health Officers

The Local Health Officer role has been in Maine statue (Title 22 MRSA 451) for many years, but only a few years ago was it reactivated by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (MCDC). The role of the LHO, as stated in the LHO Training Handbook (2013) is to “monitor and respond to immediate needs and trends in health risks to individuals or the community.” The Maine CDC considers the LHOs the eyes and ears for public health at the local level. LHOs are trained in their role as community resources and are interested is gaining experience by working with town officials on health and safety issues.
